Hard Suspension vs Soft Suspension: What Is the Difference

How to tell which type of suspension your Google Business Profile has and what each one means for your business.

Published ·Updated

If your Google Business Profile has been suspended, you may have heard the terms hard suspension and soft suspension. These are industry shorthand, not classifications used in Google's suspended and disabled profile guidance. They are commonly used to describe whether a profile remains visible and whether its owner can manage it.

What Is a Soft Suspension?

"Soft suspension" is commonly used to describe a profile that remains visible in Google Search or Google Maps while the owner's ability to manage it is restricted. The owner may lose access to the profile, be unable to make edits, or find that certain features are unavailable.

Depending on the notice shown in the account, Google may require verification or direct the owner to an appeal process. Google's Business Profile verification guidance explains the available verification methods.

What Is a Hard Suspension?

"Hard suspension" is commonly used to describe a profile that has been removed from Google Search and Google Maps. That removal can interrupt the profile's visibility and the calls or leads generated through it. It does not mean that every source of calls or leads to the business stops.

When a profile has been removed, the account notice and Google's appeal process determine the available next step. Before appealing, compare the profile with Google's Business Profile representation guidelines and correct any information that does not accurately represent the business.

Because Google does not formally label cases as "hard" or "soft," use these terms as descriptions of what you can observe, not as an official diagnosis of the violation or the required remedy.

How Do You Know Which One You Have?

Search for the business by name and check the account that manages the profile. If the profile still appears publicly but you cannot manage it, the issue is commonly described as a soft suspension. If it no longer appears publicly, it is commonly described as a hard suspension.

You can also check your Google Business Profile dashboard. A suspension notice will typically appear there, though it may not always specify the type clearly.

What the Distinction Does and Does Not Tell You

The visibility distinction helps describe the immediate effect on the profile, but it does not predict how difficult the case will be or how long it will take. The correct next step depends on the notice in the account, the profile's eligibility, and whether Google directs the owner to verify or appeal.

In both cases, acting carefully matters. Making additional edits to a suspended profile or creating a duplicate listing can make the case harder to resolve. If an appeal has already been denied, Google provides a form to request an additional review of a denied appeal.
