Duplicate Google Business Profile listings are more common than most business owners realize, and they can quietly cause real problems. Understanding what they are, how they happen, and how to address them is worth the time.
What Is a Duplicate Listing?
A duplicate listing is a Google Business Profile that represents the same business at the same location as another existing profile. In some cases, both listings are actively managed. In others, one is an old or unclaimed listing that was auto-generated and never removed.
How Do Duplicate Listings Happen?
Google sometimes auto-generates listings for businesses based on publicly available data. If a business owner later creates their own profile without finding or claiming the existing one, two listings end up existing for the same location.
Duplicate listings can also occur after a business moves, when the old address listing is never properly closed. In franchise or multi-location cases, duplicate profiles sometimes appear when locations are set up inconsistently.
Why Do Duplicate Listings Cause Problems?
When two profiles exist for the same business, reviews can be split between them. A customer who leaves a review on the duplicate listing may not be visible on the primary profile. This can make your review count appear lower than it actually is.
Duplicate listings can also confuse customers who see two different entries for what appears to be the same business, sometimes with conflicting information. They can reduce your visibility in local search by splitting your profile's authority, and they can in some cases contribute to a suspension if Google flags the case as a compliance issue.
How to Find a Duplicate Listing
Search for your business name in Google and on Google Maps. Look for any listings that appear in addition to your primary profile. You can also search your business address directly on Google Maps to see if more than one listing appears at that location.
How to Resolve a Duplicate Listing
The resolution process depends on the case. In some cases, the duplicate can be claimed and then marked as permanently closed or requested for removal. In others, a consolidation or merge request must be submitted to Google through their support channels.
If the duplicate has reviews on it, the goal is typically to consolidate those reviews into the primary profile during the merge process, though this is ultimately controlled by Google.
When It Gets Complicated
Some duplicate cases involve ownership conflicts, previous business owners, or profiles tied to former tenants at the same address. These cases require more careful handling and direct communication with Google support.
